VI. Types of Massage and Spa Facilities

• • Day Spa - The main feature of this type is that it does not offer accommodation and visitors can go for an hour or a day as they please. Clients can choose single treatments or services like a massage, facial, mani / pedi, or they can combine spa services, take a half day package or a full day pamper. Some Day Spas also offer fitness facilities and individual training programmes.

  • Health Spa or Health Farm - This category applies to any Spa that offers accommodation. Usually regular day packages are also offered for those who would like to escape for just a day, as well as the multi night or overnight packages, at Health Farms or Spas, Resorts, Hotels and Retreat.

  • Stay Spa - The name differs slightly here depending on where you are in the world Health Spa is commonly used in South Africa and the United States whereas Health Farm is used in the United Kingdom. The focus in this category is beauty, health and fitness in a relaxed setting. Guests can choose either healthy cuisine or whatever they like.

  • Destination Spa - This Spa is all about health and wellness. Guests will find healthy cuisine and professional treatments. Wellness talks and education also feature as well as fitness programs designed to support and enhance well-being and good health. Location plays a major role in the popularity of a spa and visitors are spoilt for choice when coming to South Africa. Coastal spas which are sprinkled from Cape Town to KwaZulu-Natal provide stunning views, refreshing sea breezes and rejuvenating treatments. If you can't escape the city, take heart! All major cities have a variety of spas offering a range of treatments for the weary body.

  • Resort or Hotel Spa - A Resort Spa may have a particular focus be it Golf or Game activities. Both Hotels and Resorts generally have a wide variety of facilities and a Spa leisure center with treatment rooms, a sauna and steam room, Jacuzzi and swimming pool, here guests can relax in their robes or fitness clothing but not in the main hotel buildings. Treatments offered cover the basics like massage, facials, beauty and body, although specialized treatments may not be available. Families generally enjoy these venues due to the variety of facilities offered, although the Spa center may have age restrictions or at least on some of the treatments. Guests who want to focus on health and wellness may find it difficult to do so here because the emphasis is on relaxation and fun and full service menus in the restaurants.

  • Holistic or Alternative Healing Spa - For body and soul, this type of Spa is focused on the promotion of well-being and balance through modern health therapies and traditional beauty treatments.

  • Health Hydro or Wellness Center - This venue is for clients wanting to change their lifestyles and educate themselves on how to prevent disease and be proactive in managing their health and wellness.

  • Pamper Spa - Designed to spoil and pamper clients who want to de-stress without being concerned about their diet. The emphasis is on relaxation, fun and a little decadence combined with a variety of Spa services where clients can enjoy a wonderful Aromatherapy Massage or pop in for a luxury manicure.

  • Medi Spa - This is where wellness treatments or procedures are carried out under the management of a Medical Doctor. Other medical services are also offered and include Nutritionists, Chiropractors, Sports Injury Medicine and Physical Therapy.

  • Rehab Centre - Otherwise known as clinics, these carry out detoxification and rehabilitation procedures or treatments for people suffering from various types of addiction, also depression and eating disorders. The clinics are usually hospitals with fully equipped facilities and high-care, Medical Doctors, highly trained Nurses, and associated services such as Social Workers, Dietitians, Counselors, Therapists and Clinical Psychologists are in attendance.

VII. Types of Massage Services

• • SW - Swedish Massage - commonly referred to as the “classic” massage the technique of which varies from light to vigorous.

  • SH - Shiatsu Massage - means “finger pressure” in Japanese and the massage, which is a type of alternative medicine, includes the technique using fingers, thumbs, and palms for assisted stretching.

  • TH - Thai Massage - involves a number of stretching movements to improve the body flexibility, joint movement, and improve blood circulation throughout the body.

  • KI - Kids Massage - oil massage, more on gliding strokes for kids ages 6-10 years old.

  • HE - Head & Back Massage - soothing Head & Back Massage, more on gliding strokes for 30 Minutes.

  • HA - Hand & Arms Massage - relaxing Hand & Arms Massage, more on gliding strokes for 30 Minutes.

  • FO - Foot & Legs Massage - calming Foot & Legs Massage, more on gliding strokes for 30 Minutes.

  • CO - Combination Massage - combination of Swedish (Oil) and Shiatsu (Dry) Massage for a total relaxing session of 90 Minutes.

  • HO- Hot Stone Massage - a specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, heated stones as an extension of their own hands, or by placing them on the body. The heat can be both deeply relaxing and help warm up tight muscles so the therapist can work more deeply, more quickly.

  • VE - Ventosa Massage - An ancient Chinese alternative treatment that uses local suctions on the skin to eliminate stagnation of the blood flow. It also promotes healing for a variety of health conditions like colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, body pain, swelling and gastrointestinal disorders.

  • AR - Aromatherapy Massage - Swedish massage therapy using massage oil or lotion that contains essential oils (highly concentrated plant oils). During an aromatherapy massage, you inhale these essential oil molecules or absorb them through your skin.

  • RE - Reflex Massage - based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feet that relate to every organ, gland, and system of the body.

  • SP - Sports Massage - a popular form of treatment for soft tissue injuries. Getting a regular sports massage also forms part of many athletes injury prevention strategy.

  • PR - Prenatal Massage - a healthy way to eliminate stress, promote complete wellness and a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. This therapy relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as edema (or swelling), stiff neck, backaches, leg cramps, and headaches.

  • PREM - Premium Massage - Premium Massage Service, 60 Mins. Swedish Massage, Comes with free (1) Face Mask or (1) Glass of Wine after the service.

  • TS - Tsunami Massage - 4-hands massage, two therapists work on one client, often using synchronized moves. A Tsunami massage can be like experiencing two full body massages at the same time.

  • OSM - Office Syndrome Massage - a massage therapy given to office workers that involve sitting down for long periods of time. This massage therapy can be performed with (2) clients for (30) minutes with one therapist performing massages one after another.

  • HS - Hair Spa - a therapy that is essential in maintaining a healthy hair growth. It is basically a procedure that helps to make your hair strong, bouncy and shiny, while simultaneously helps to deal with dandruff, damaged, and fall control.

  • BS - Body Scrub - a mixture which is used to scrub away dead skin cells from the body. It exfoliates and hydrates your skin, leaving it smooth and soft.

  • FS - Foot Spa - a relaxing and effective technique that caters with all the demands of the feet. Primarily the technique involve soaking of the feet in a foot bowl with warm water, scrubbing, massaging and detoxifying, cleaning and applying foot lotion.

  • HDS - Hand Spa - an effective and relaxing hand treatment that involves scrubbing, massaging and detoxifying, cleaning and applying Hand lotion.

  • PN - Power Nap - relaxing short period of sleep that helps to regain power for the whole day.

  • FC - Facial Cleansing - a family member of skin care treatments for the face that helps to hydrate, brighten your skin, the treatment includes exfoliation, toners, scrubs, creams, lotions, and facial massage.

  • FM - Face Mask - a perfect skin care treatment to help you with your skin care concerns, it can help you hydrate or brighten skin, pull out impurities, remove excess oils and help improve the appearance of your pores.

  • BW - Body Wash - a relaxing hot water body wash that rinse of dead skins and helps to improve blood circulation before or after a massage service.

  • MC - Manicure - a cosmetic beauty treatment for fingernails or toenails, this treatment consists of filing and shaping the free edge, pushing and clipping with a cuticle pusher and cuticle nippers, the treatment involves massage of the hand or foot, and the application of fingernail polish.

  • PC - Pedicure - a cosmetic beauty treatment for fingernails or toenails, this treatment consists of filing and shaping the free edge, pushing and clipping with a cuticle pusher and cuticle nippers, the treatment involves massage of the hand or foot, and the application of fingernail polish.

  • MF - Matte Finish - a type of nail polish that can be added in the final application of your fingernail or toenail polish.

  • TGP - Trugel Polish - a type of nail polish that can be added in the final application of your fingernail or toenail polish.
